FBI wiretap of judge upheld

The FBI's use of an electronic bug to gain evidence for briberycharges against former Cook County Circuit Court Judge David J.Shields was upheld in federal court Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Ilana D. Rovner swept aside arguments thatthe hidden microphone in Shields' Daley Center chambers had not beenproperly authorized.

The listening device was installed after being authorized onAug. 29, 1988, by acting Chief Judge James B. Moran.

Conversations it recorded are considered critical to the caseagainst Shields and a co-defendant, attorney Pat F. De Leo.
