Fed: Crosby plays down Lib leadership speculation
CANBERRA, April 14 AAP - The Liberal Party's federal director today played down speculationsurrounding Prime Minister John Howard's future and the leadership ambitions of TreasurerPeter Costello.
Mr Howard promised prior to the last election to review his future next year when he turns 64.
But federal director Lynton Crosby said media speculation on whether Mr Howard wouldstep aside for Mr Costello was akin to small child on a long car trip, constantly queryingwhen the journey would end.
"The fact is that John Howard has put his position in relation to the leadership outthere," he told the Seven Network.
"He's been honest and open, as he has been on issues like tax reform in the past, buthis challenge and focus right now is to continue to implement the policies he took tothe last election.
"And I think all this sort of talk is just ... `are we there yet?', are we there yet?'.
"Lets just enjoy the journey, look at the scenery and relax," Mr Crosby said.
He said both Mr Howard and Mr Costello had strong leadership credentials.
"In these more uncertain times you want strong, effective people in charge of yourcountry," he said.
"John Howard and Peter Costello are a team of strong and effective people who haveruns on the board."
