Fed: Bosses spending more on training: ABS

CANBERRA, April 2 AAP - Australian employers have substantially increased the amountof money they spend on training workers in the past six years, official figures revealedtoday.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said employers spent $3.653 billion in netdirect expenditure on structured training in the 2001-02 financial year.

This represented an increase of 52 per cent compared to 1996.

Net training expenditure averaged $458 per employee and represented 1.3 per cent oftotal gross wages and salaries.

The ABS said the strong growth in training expenditure partly reflected an increasein the proportion of employers providing training.

"In 1997, 61 per cent of Australian employers provided or supported training for theiremployees. By June 2002, this had increased to 81 per cent."

The ABS said about one in five employers did not provide any training to their employees.

The majority of those employers (80 per cent) indicated this was because their employeeswere already adequately trained.
