Loyola booklet gives a preview of college life

Learning about college before you get there helps you learnmore once you col

At least, that's the theory behind "How to Survive FreshmanYear, Tips from College Students Who've Been There," a bookletpublished by Loyola University.

The booklet advises new college students to: Bring lots of hangers, an extension cord and a mending kit. Pack along a popcorn popper - "a social magnet equivalent to thecampfire. You will become popular, powerful, glamorous." Bring a few odd dishes, glasses and pieces of silverware - "greatfor those late-night snacks or pizza parties."

The booklet also frowns on buying fancy new luggage, which isdifficult to store once you arrive on campus.

Other advice in the booklet includes: Commuting students should try to eat lunch in student cafeterias, where they can meet other students, rather than in fast-foodrestaurants. Get to know the location of bulletin boards with items of interestto students and check them regularly. In addition to importantofficial notices, you'll also find news of campus films, clubmeetings, dances, parties and other social activities.
